The Canal Boatbuilders Association - Friendly and Knowledgeable Chairman's WelcomeIn any household the plan to buy a new boat will have been thought about, perhaps argued about, and discussed again and again. In mine it certainly would. Then once the exciting decision is taken there comes that all important first contact with a boatbuilder - but which boatbuilder? Clearly what's needed is the assurance that the builder will be knowledgeable, will be friendly, will know that what suits one owner would not suit another and will be abreast of the best safety standards. By buying from a member of the Canal Boatbuilders Association you can be sure of all those things for that is how our members work. The information on this website has 3 purposes. Firstly its sets out in a simple and direct way to explain the differences between narrowboats and wide beam craft, and to illustrate the styles in which they are usually built, Secondly what other aspects are important to know for a decision to be made, and lastly is to introduce you to a boatbuilder member, of which a directory of all members is available from the main menu bar. All our members are also members of the British Marine Federation (BMF) and so are kept upto date with the most recent technical and safety standards. Several members exhibit at boat shows organised by the BMF and the visitor should look for the familar green CBA logo - there is one at the top of this page - and be sure of a warm welcome on the stand. So, by having your boat built and fitted out by a CBA member you can be sure that it will be individual to you, built to the highest standards, and by people for whom the waterways are a way of life.
