The Green Blue aims to educate the recreational boating sector about their potential environmental impacts and how these may be avoided. It is a unique partnership approach between the British Marine Federation, representing 90% of the marine sector, and the Royal Yachting Association, representing over 100,000 individual boat users, 1,500 affiliated clubs and 2,000 accredited training centres. The project has achieved significant progress in its first two years by its guidance to boat owners, sailing clubs and marine businesses. Our practical advice and information has already brought positive changes to the way boaters, marinas and boatyards behave towards our coastal and inland waters.

We have now produced a short but concise code of conduct written for all people who use recreational craft on the waterways such as narrow boats, motor cruising vessels, sports boats and personal watercraft. It promotes environmental best practice and gives advice and information on how to limit their environmental impact. The waterproof sticker can be used by boat owners to proclaim their boat a 'Green Blue Boat' and includes a number of tips to remind visitors how to limit their impact on the environment whilst on board. With the support of the Environment Agency, we hope that this code will encourage all boat users to think about the impact they may have on rivers and canals and promote positive behaviour change to help protect the waters they enjoy.
